Bad Weather Driving Tips

Whether you’ve been driving for years or are just getting started behind the wheel, getting from one place to another is always a challenge. Just when you think you have it figured out, Mother Nature comes along and throws some snow, rain, wind or a combination of all in your way.

Here are a few tips to stay safe on the road in all kinds of weather:

  • Be prepared. Always make sure your windshield washer fluid is full and wipers are in good condition.
  • If your battery has some age on it, take your vehicle to a service center to have it checked.
  • Try to keep your gas tank at least half full to avoid a frozen fuel line.
  • Clear all ice and snow from windows and mirrors before driving.
  • When you run into bad weather, reduce your speed.
  • Bridges, overpasses and other structures can get icy before the roads do, so use extra precaution when crossing them.
  • Increase the space between you and the vehicle in front of you. That gives you more time to react in an emergency.
  • Never lock your brakes on an icy road. If you start to skid, turn in the direction of the skid.
  • Stay alert and don’t take unnecessary chances.

Make sure your vehicle is in good working order before heading out. Routine maintenance can reduce the risk of breakdowns in inclement weather.
