Chick Care 101: Everything You Need to Know

Bringing home baby chicks is an exciting step toward raising a happy, healthy flock! Whether you're a beginner or an experienced poultry keeper, it's essential to understand the basics of chick care to ensure they thrive. Here’s everything you need to know to get started.
- Brooder Basics
A brooder is a warm, safe space where your chicks will spend their first few weeks of life. You can use a large plastic tote, a stock tank, or a wooden box — just make sure it has high sides to keep your chicks contained. Line the bottom with pine shavings (avoid cedar, as it can be harmful) and clean it regularly to prevent odors and bacteria buildup.
- Heat and Light
Chicks need warmth to survive. Use a Heat Lamp Brooder along with a 250-Watt Heat Lamp Bulb to keep the temperature around 95°F for the first week. Lower the temperature by 5°F each week until they are fully feathered and can regulate their body temperature. Make sure there’s enough space for them to move away from the heat if they get too warm.
- Choosing the Right Feed
A high-quality Medicated Chick Starter/Grower is crucial for your chicks’ growth. This feed helps prevent common diseases like coccidiosis while supporting healthy weight gain and development. Fresh, clean water should always be available — consider using a chick waterer to prevent spills and contamination.
- Feeding Essentials
Having the right feeders makes feeding time easy and mess-free. For ground feeding, the Poultry Ground Feeder is a great option with its flip-top design and 28 feeding holes. If you prefer a hanging option, the Hanging Poultry Feeder is perfect for chicks, with a sturdy metal bracket and durable, rust-resistant plastic construction.
- Socialization and Space
Chicks are social animals and do best when raised with others. Keep at least 3-5 chicks together to prevent loneliness and stress. Make sure they have enough space — about ½ square foot per chick in the brooder, increasing as they grow.
- Health and Hygiene
Monitor your chicks daily for signs of illness. Pasty butt (dried feces blocking their vent) is a common issue in young chicks and can be fatal if not addressed. Simply clean the area gently with a warm, damp cloth. Keep bedding dry and avoid overcrowding to prevent disease spread.
- Transitioning to the Coop
At around 6-8 weeks old, when chicks are fully feathered, they can transition to their outdoor coop. Ensure the coop is predator-proof, well-ventilated, and equipped with proper roosting bars and nesting boxes. Slowly introduce them to older birds to prevent pecking order issues.
