Water: The critical nutrient for horses
When planning your horse's diet, don't forget water - one of the most critical nutrients for equines. A sufficient supply of clean, fresh water is essential for your horse each day.
Exercise, lactation, and elevated environmental temperatures increase the amount of water required. As a baseline for horses at maintenance, water should be furnished at approximately 1/3 gallon per pound of dry matter intake. Except immediately following exercise, free continuous access to water is the best policy. Horses deprived of adequate water are more susceptible to digestive disturbances such as colic.
